Rainbow Snippet 7/17/2021

Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).

In this group you’ll find anything from romance and historical fiction to mystery and YA. The common thread is that every story’s main character identifies as LGBTQ+. The snippets could range from zero flames to full-on sexytimes, anything goes content-wise. The only rule is snippets will be 6 sentences long–one for each color in the Pride flag.

I would invite everyone to please come check out the Rainbow Snippets group, click on a link, read and comment on the writing available and get involved yourselves in this awesome exercise. The link to the group can be found HERE.  Today's snippet is from the same WIP as the previous one.

This is from my current WIP, featuring a retired MMA fighter who can't stay out of his own way long enough to see that the two guys he's fallen for are only trying to look out to keep him safe, not smother him with their concerns over some of his behaviors. Turns out his friends are just as concerned, which is why they've shown up at his door.

“Hey, wait a minute,” Jesse interrupted, turning to study Jaylon. “Didn’t you say you guys were going out up until ten days ago?”

“Sure did.”

“It’s been nine days since any of us have heard from him,” Jesse said. “Hitting seven was what triggered this little road trip.”

“That’s one more day than I got,” Jaylon replied. “Owen and I came over to tell him goodbye before we headed out for a few engagements I needed to attend to, only to find that he’d left on a little hiking expedition before we had the chance to. We only just got back this afternoon and as you saw when I started to come in here, he tried to slam the door in my face.”

“That’s a new one,” Nick said. “He usually has much better manners than that.”

“Oh really, so what’s his typical way of breaking up with someone?”

“He doesn’t have one,” Nick replied. “His method has always been to avoid entanglements in the first place.”

“Yeah, that might have been kinder in this case.”

Ouch.

By the time Koda and Avery joined them outside, they had the hibachi and the stone grill built into the patio primed, the coals in flames and rapidly heating.

“Good to see you getting a hint of color, kid,” his father remarked by way of greeting. “I’m always afraid you won’t remember to get a bit of food, water and sun from time to time.”

“I’m not a house plant you know,” Koda grumbled.

“Hard to believe sometimes with the way you tend to lock yourself away in your room with the blackout curtains drawn. I swear one of these times you’re going to come out glowing like those deep-sea creatures the light can never touch,” Avery remarked, pointing the tongs at him before laying them on the table.

“Now that could be a whole series right there,” Kenji offered.

“Oh man, you could call it How to care for and feed your Koda, with Kenji as the star,” Avery quipped, grinning at them.

“Something I should know?” Koda’s father asked.

“We’re dating,” Koda remarked, beaming over at Kenji when he said it.
