Rainbow Snippet April 24th

Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).

In this group you’ll find anything from romance and historical fiction to mystery and YA. The common thread is that every story’s main character identifies as LGBTQ+. The snippets could range from zero flames to full-on sexytimes, anything goes content-wise. The only rule is snippets will be 6 sentences long–one for each color in the Pride flag.

I would invite everyone to please come check out the Rainbow Snippets group, click on a link, read and comment on the writing available and get involved yourselves in this awesome exercise. The link to the group can be found HERE

I'm late to the Snippet party this week, been gathering the pieces together to revamp my kitchen new paint, flooring, sink, soon as my son grabs us a paintbrush from the hardware store (because of course i forgot that) we'll get started. Today's snippet is from my current work in progress Serpent's Kiss. (A Snakeshifter Novel)

His vision was no longer filled with dancing rainbow colors and his heartbeat wasn’t pounding a rhythm in his chest or brain. He wasn’t calm yet, could have used water or even better, something with sugar, but for now he figured that he was about as steady as he was going to get, even with his hand shaking. Not like Zxex cared, the other man was glaring at him and tapping his foot impatiently.

“You want to wait to pass out until after you tell me,” Zxex complained.

“Maybe I should just not tell you.” Darrell grumbled Zxex’s eyes narrowed and he sat on the edge of Darrell’s bed, then reclined, getting comfortable.

“Fine, I’ll just stay until you do.” Zxex declared.

Darrell was too tired and too shaky for this shit, he needed Zxex to leave so he could lay down and finish pulling himself together, imagine Zaiden’s fingers combing through his hair, maybe even stretched out on the bed behind him one arm clasped across his abs as he steadily kept conversation going to keep Darrell from drifting off again. It happened sometimes aftershock visions, wild, random things that felt as if they’d been plucked from the air.

“When you said early, I didn’t quite think you meant before the will-o-the wisps faded.”

“They have faded,” Zaiden informed him, but his eyes were raking over Darian’s bare chest in a manner that wasn’t as detatched as he usually seemed. “You should take a shower and then dress, while you do, I’ll explain how today is going to go.”

“You’re gonna explain it to me while I’m in the shower?”

“Somehow I have the impression that you do not have a modesty issue.”

“You’d be right, but I was pretty god da-errr, pretty sure you did.”

“And what gave you that impression?”

....And All Shall Fade to Black (April 15th update)

Despite how sure he was that he knew who the killer was, Jax was proved wrong in the end, much to the enjoyment of a smirking Danny.

“So nightcap it is,” Jax said as he laced his hand with Danny. The look of surprise on Danny’s face was more than enough to make him let go immediately and duck his head, his face turning a light shade of scarlet.

“It’s okay, I don’t mind holding hands,” Danny said as he reached out and took Jax’s hand in his own. Jax gave him a small smile before they began the short walk back to Danny’s car. One day, Jax hoped to get him on his motorcycle, his body tightening a little as he imagined the feel of Danny pressed against his back, his arms wrapped tightly around Jax’s middle.

“…so what did you think?” Danny asked, and Jax blinked, realizing he’d missed part of the conversation.

“Sorry,” he muttered, his face turning scarlet again. “What do I think about what?”

“The erotic art show,” Danny said. “It opens on Thursday and all of the proceeds go to a wonderful foundation that promotes heathy, sex positive lifestyle.”

“That sounds pretty cool actually, and I really enjoyed our trip to the museum a few weeks back. I’d be curious to see the artwork, actually, were you planning to go?”

Danny laughed. “That’s what I was trying to ask you. I plan to go opening night and since Thursdays are your day off, I was wondering if you’d like to go with me?”

Jax gave Danny’s hand a little squeeze. “That would be fun, I’d love to.”

“Perfect, maybe we can have dinner before hand?”

“Sure, have you tried the new seafood place over on Columbus Street, they have amazing clam chowder and their scallops are damn near perfect,” Jax said. “I found it a couple nights ago when I was on my dinner break.”

Danny grinned at the enthusiasm Jax showed for the restaurant and the food they served. He’d been surprised to see Jax clean his plate at the murder mystery dinner and eat his desert as well, and he couldn’t help but wonder what had changed in Jax’s life to motivate  him to start eating properly. Unfortunately, he knew he couldn’t ask without risking a fight between them, and this moment just felt so right that the last thing he wanted to do was ruin it.

Jax opened the door for him when they got to the car, even though it was Danny who would be driving. The gesture only softened Danny more to the prospect of dating Jax. Yes, he had issues, and yes there was a great deal they would need to talk about if things were going to work between them, but when Danny looked at the big, tattooed bear of a man, he realized that despite his best efforts not to fall for him, he had done just that.

In the car, Jax sang along softly to the radio, an old classic rock song, and Danny listened, a little surprised at how well Jax could sing. It didn’t take long to reach the apartment, and as soon as they stepped inside they were greeted by Callum and Max whose door was open as they played cards and listened to an old George Carlin tape.

“How was the murder mystery dinner?” Max asked.

“Fucking awesome,” Jax replied his face lightning up with a smile. “I screwed up and picked the wrong killer though.”

Callum chuckled.

“See, I told you that sometimes mysteries can surprise you.”

“The actors did an amazing job,” Danny said. “You guys should check it out sometime. Maybe we can all go together.”

“That would be pretty cool,” Jax said.

“Yeah, you’ll have to tell us when the next one is that you can actually get to.” Max said. “With your schedule, Jax, you’ll prolly have to wait for a day when you don’t have anyone booked.”

“Like that’s gonna happen anytime soon,” Jax muttered. “I’m already pretty booked for the upcoming week, but I will let you know when my schedule eases up.”

“Sounds good,” Max said.

“Well, we’ll talk to you guys later,” Jax said.

“Or you guys could always join us and have a couple beers,’ Callum offered.

“Nope,” Danny said with a grin. “Jax lost a bet when he chose the wrong killer, so we’re heading upstairs for a nightcap.”

Max snickered a little, covering it up with his hand while Callum just raised and eyebrow.

“We’ll see you guys later,” Jax said as he took Danny’s hand and led him up the stairs.

^^^

As always, entering Danny’s apartment meant being greeted by Lyric, Chorus and Inferno, who mewed and attempted to trip them up until they were given what they felt was the proper amount of attention. Danny watched as Jax rubbed Lyrics ears while trying to stop Chorus from climbing up his arm and onto his shoulder, a losing effort once Inferno decided to put his paws on Jax’s chest and rub his face beneath Jax’s chin.

Grinning, Jax took the attention in stride before Danny finally took mercy on him and shooed the cats away.

“You’re good with animals, did you have a bunch of pets growing up?” Danny asked.

“Mostly goldfish,” Jax explained. “But they always seemed to live a really long time. I had a couple gerbils too, and a hamster.”

“No cats or dogs?”

“Nope, my mom didn’t like cats, didn’t want there to be a litterbox somewhere that might offend her male callers, and dogs scared her.”

“That sucks, I’ve always had cats, but when I was growing up we had a dog too.”

“What kind?”

“Sally was a Dalmatian, bouncy as hell and always full of energy. It was a good thing we had a huge backyard because she loved it when someone threw something for her to fetch.”

“What happened to her?”

“She passed away when she was eighteen, right in front of the fireplace, which was her favorite spot.”

Danny watched Jax’s face color a little before he ducked his head. “Damn, I’m sorry.”

“I’m not,” Danny insisted. “She lived a long, full life. Made my days a whole lot fuller having her in them.”

Jax frowned a little and Danny could see that he was struggling to understand. He decided to give him a moment while he headed to the kitchen to make them drinks.

“Hope coffee and whiskey sounds good, that’s really the only alcohol I keep around the place.”

“Works for me,” Jax said. “I know you have a thing about alcohol.

Danny chuckled as he put the coffee on to brew.

“I don’t have anything against alcohol, just the way it makes some people act.”

Jax’s frown turned into a scowl. “And what, you thought me and Callum and Max would act like assholes just ‘cause we were having a couple beers?”

“It’s not as if I knew any of you well, still don’t, really, but I wasn’t willing to take the chance.” Danny admitted. “But hey, at least now you know that I’m not completely reckless and irresponsible about who I let into my life.”

“Hey, I apologized for that.”

“Yeah, I know, just saying.”

Jax ran his fingers through his hair, lifting it from the nap of his neck before letting it fall back into place. His face was tinged lightly with red and I could tell that I’d embarrassed him a little. It hadn’t been my intention though I had to admit that it was easier dealing with that Jax than the one who was opinionated and in control.

“When I was growing up my mom dated a lot of jerks,” Jax said softly. “Guys like your ex, Sean, who’d call her names and beat on her. She’d run the whole gamut of bullshit dealing with them, from trying to change herself to be everything they wanted to excepting all of their apologies every time they decided she’d make a good punching bag. I guess seeing that shit with you and Sean just made me think too much about her and the past and I got pissed off all over again.”

Now it was my turn to feel a little bit of shame and discomfort as I headed back to the kitchen to pour the coffee and add the booze. He’d said he had issues but I never imagined they tied in with my experience, nor had I ever considered that what he’d witnessed and been forced to break up had affected him on a level that had nothing to do with me.

“I’m sorry, I thought you were just being a jerk because you thought I was weak,” Danny finally admitted.

“It was a little of that, I was mad that you didn’t fight back even if he was bigger,” Jax admitted. “Then I felt like a jerk, because he’d have probably hurt you more.”
“Yeah,” Danny admitted.

“Was that the first night he hit you?”

Danny nodded. “I don’t know what he was using that night. other times he’d come in pissed off and yelling, but I always tried to stay calm and get him to settle down. That night I was tired of it all and I wanted him to leave, maybe I should have waited until whatever it was had worked its way out of his system, but I was over it all by that point and wanted to move on.”

“No, I, umm, I’m glad you didn’t wait,” Jax said. “It might have gotten worse.”

He sipped his coffee watching me over the rim of the mug. I loved his eyes, the blue of them was so bright and vibrant I felt like I could almost drown in them. Like they were the ocean and I was lost at sea. Then he smiled and the view changed from beautiful to stunning.

“I’m glad you agreed to come to diner with me tonight,” he said. “I was afraid I’d messed things up completely. I…”

He started chewing on his lower lip, his gaze having turned from my face to the coffee he swirled in his mug.

“I felt like such an asshole when I left here the day you shut the door in my face. I was trying to find the words to explain to you that I really liked you a lot but that I had a lot of trouble liking myself and I didn’t really know how to do relationships well. I didn’t mean to make you feel as if I thought you weren’t worth dating, its um, more like I’m not worth dating.”

“Who the fuck told you that?”

Jax was blinking, and it took me a moment to realize that he was blinking up at me and that I had shot to my feet and was now shaking with rage and frustration in front of my chair with my fists clenched. Whoa, I needed to calm down a moment and take stock of why his words had pissed me off so badly. Maybe it was the tone and the soul deep realization I’d had that he absolutely, one hundred percent believed what he’d just said.

Taking a deep breath I forced myself to open my fists and step into his space. His mug was almost empty so I plucked it from his fingers and set it down on the table beside him. Dropping to my knees in front of him I press forward, forcing him to open his legs so I could slot myself between them. That put me face to face with him, though he was trying to look anywhere but at me.

That wouldn’t do.

I slid my palms against his cheeks, framed his face and titled it so I could see those gorgeous eyes again.

“Whoever told you that you weren’t worth dating lied. Anyone who’d make you feel that way is the one who wasn’t worth anything.”

I was shocked when his eyes teared up but more shocked when he kissed me. Gentle, slow, I could taste the tears that were flowing down his cheeks, my fingertips were wet with them. I slid my fingers higher, into his hair, puling just a little and he moaned and angled his head just right to slot our lips together firmly, his kiss growing more intense. Needing more I deepened it, needing to show him how I’d come to feel for him, how awesome I thought he was, despite anything that he might feel was wrong with himself.

How long we kissed I don’t know, just that when I pulled back we were both panting and his pupils were blown wide with lust and longing. He growled and it was the sexist thing I’d heard in a long time. Then he was kissing me again, and there was only wild, unrestrained passion. Holy shit it was like he was spilling electricity through my body, invading my soul with his tongue and the little nips he kept delivering to my lips.

“Danny,” he growled, pulling away, his hands going to my shoulders to hold me in place when I tried to move to kiss him again. “Danny we gotta stop or I’m gonna tackle you to the floor and beg you to fuck me.”

Oh. Holy. Shit. Never in my wildest fantasies of us together had I ever pictured that I might be the one fucking him. I’d taken him for strict top, yet another way that I’d misjudged him. We still had so much to learn about one another. It would be easy, so damned easy to give in to lust and desire right there on the floor. but I wanted to know him better, needed to share more of myself with him too. I wanted to take things slow and keep building on this thing between us, so I nodded, and scooted back more.

“I want you,” I told him softly as I gently caressed his cheek. “But I want to know you better first.”

“Me too,” he said as he pressed his cheek against my palm and closed his eyes. There was something so vulnerable about that gesture that for a moment I forgot which of us was the big, tatted up biker and which of us was the small theater geek. He made me feel…needed and not in the ways other had, that had just left me feeling used.

“Do you want to go for a walk tomorrow morning?” I asked.

“I’d like that very much,” he relied as he climbed to his feet. He reached for me, pulling me into a hug and holding me close, kissed the top of my head, and whispered goodnight before he slipped out the door. For several moments I simply stood there in the silence, a smile on my lips.

That had been the best nightcap ever.

I missed being able to snippet last week as I did not have a laptop at the BDSM writers conference I attended, but the conference was amazing and anyone wishing to read about it should scroll down to the blog entry below this one., Today's snippet is from my current work in progress Serpent's Kiss. (A Snakeshifter Novel)

“I have questions” Darrell stated.

“I will answer all that I am able” she said.

“Why are you all so convinced that I can help you”

Kandaal gave him a sad smile “That you are unaware of your worth is a sad thing.”

He cocked his head to the side, waiting.

“A prophet is more than just telling the future, your ability to read people is invaluable in negotiations, in business and in politics. You will be asked to help a lot of individuals, and we will need to guide you so you won’t be used.”

Thoughts from last weeks BDSM Writer's Con

I love to travel, though most times, travel for me means a tent and my pickup, the woods, a ton of trails and taking pictures. I’m not the most social person in the world, so the idea of getting out there and doing something that actually involves interacting with people can be a bit daunting. This year I vowed to do better though, this year, I actually signed up for some writing conferences, the first of which took place last week in Everett Washington.

Never in a million years did I imagine I would find myself at a BDSM writer’s conference. Me, the woman who blushes when she writes sex scenes and who generally tends to fade to black on scenes before they get to racy. Or did, before last November, when I sat down to tackle my NaNo story “Burning Luck” and had the characters take the story places that had me blushing way more than normal. There was a part of me who said we’d just tuck the story away, never show it to anyone, let it be for my eyes only, but there was another part who was very proud of Lucky’s story.

I have to admit that I spent some time thinking about that, and whether I should tone it down. I also spent some time reflecting on my feelings about the story and realized that I was far more proud of it than I was too shy to let others see it. Eventually, I talked myself into sending it off to my Betas and received some great advice on how to tighten it up and even out the character interactions. I’m almost finished with those changes actually, and expect to have the story ready to submit in about two weeks.

See, that’s where the BDSM conference came in, because yes, Lucky’s story went there and more than once, and I was only about 80 % certain I’d done it right. So off I went with my messenger bag and suitcase, on the bus to Everett to learn what I needed to learn to polish up my manuscript and man, am I glad I went, because I learned so much more than that.

It took a day and a half to get there, time enough to draft most of the plot of a new story. I thought of kicking my muse, damnit, I already have several works in progress, but never look a gift muse in the mouth I guess, I’ll just have to keep my hands off those notes until my other WIPs are done.

Getting into Everett at roughly 11pm meant I was starving and tired and debating which was more important. Thankfully Dennys was right across the street from the hotel, which is exactly where I headed after I’d checked in and dropped my things off in my room. A nice hot meal, a shower and a king sized bed, that was the perfect end to two days on the road.

Of course, unlike any sane person, there was no way I was sleeping in, I was up at 7 the following morning and the promise of a beautiful day sent me hurrying to find sweats and a t-shirt so I could go explore. I never did find a bookstore downtown but I did find an organic food store, grabbed some drinks to store in my hotel fridge, met some interesting people, saw the waterfront, found an awesome steakhouse for lunch and got inspired. So much so that by the time I got back to my hotel I was already working out the details of a short story for an anthology I’m hoping to submit to.

Of course this would be about the time the nerves hit, because now it was time to shower and actually go upstairs to the meet and greet and meet my fellow authors. I have to admit I stalled out on the elevator, had to detour outside for a smoke before heading up. Needed to settle my nerves a bit, ‘cause did I mention I suck at meeting new people? No, okay well, I just did.

It was a little intimidating at first, and I kind of froze at the door when Dr. Charlie answered it, but it wasn’t as scary as I’d built it up in my head to be and by the time we’d proceeded to the Bluewater distillery for drinks and snacks I had met some amazing individuals, one of whom would be my conference buddy all the way through to the end.

The drink they’d designed for us, the “Spank me,” was amazing, as was the conversation, which made it so much easier to look forward to the following day and more people. The conference kicked off with Dr. Charlie speaking about all of the things that were in store for us as well as the history of the conference, and then our Keynote speaker, Tiffany Reisz got up and shared some amazing bits of her life with us, and suddenly the prospect of spending the week surrounded by relative strangers wasn’t so daunting anymore.

The classes were amazing. Having the choice of which ones to attend meant that I could actually tailor my conference experience to the things that I was certain I needed to learn for my story as well as satisfy my curiosity about things I knew next to nothing about. Needless to say, I spent several evenings making notes and fleshing out ideas, because the thought of shying away from the subject matter flew right out of my head as soon as other characters started to speak up, wanting to tell me their kink filled stories.

The presenters Dr. Charlie lined up were wonderful about answering questions and in each class, there was as much practical demonstration as there was conversation. Before the weekend was over, I’d gotten to experience what it was like to be caned, flogged, whipped with a single tail, paddled, and a few other interesting experiences that will all go into upcoming pieces of work.

For me the conference tore down walls I was hiding behind, letting fear of what others would think of me for writing what I wanted to write color what the characters were actually doing. I left feeling empowered and free of those fears and ready to tell the stories I’d been dying to tell. I’m sure there will still be blushing while words are flowing onto the page, but it’s nice to know that feeling of indecisiveness and the need to censor myself is gone.

For a first writing convention experience, it was phenomenal. I am so glad that I was able to shove fear aside and go. I left with some wonderful contacts willing to answer questions that might pop up while I work, and a wealth of new information that will allow me to delve deeper into scenes and characters than I previously would have been able to. I, for one, will be attending this conference again, and any others that I can afford to get to that are workshop heavy. It is absolutely mind blowing what one can learn in just a few days.

Sure it took three days to get home (wtf seriously they couldn't send me back on the same route they sent me out there? grumbles) but it gave me time to catch up on sleep and work on stories so I suppose its all good in its own way. Certainly well worth the experience.

As with last week, today's snippet is from my current work in progress Serpent's Kiss. (A Snakeshifter Novel)

“I am really growing tired of your stubbornness!” Zaiden hissed. “Must you fight me at every turn?”

“Where. Are. We?” Darrell bit out.

“Deep below the forests of Washington State, or at least we will be, if you will stop making everything difficult and follow me into the tunnels.”

“As long as it’s clear that I can leave any time I want.”

Zaiden sighed and ran a hand through his hair, grimacing a little. Darrell knew the feeling, he was dying for a shower, but he’d be damned if he followed him one more step without any assurances.

“You do realize that you’ve already come too far to just turn around and go back,” Zaiden pointed out. “As I said before, if I had wished to bring you here by force, I would have simply compeled you, just as I am fully capable of doing to get you to follow me into the tunnels.

Happy Freebie Friday....And All Shall Fade to Black (new update)

It took all of the nerve he could muster up to walk up to Danny after rehearsals on Monday afternoon and tap him on the shoulder.

“Hey, what’s going on?” Danny asked when he turned.

“I got the office finished, and the mouse, I was wondering if you had a moment to take a look,” Jax replied.

“Sure,” Danny said, before following him to the back.

Grinning, Jax pulled down the sheet he’d hung over the set, and watched Danny’s eyes light up. A smile slowly crossed Danny’s face as he walked around the piece, admiring the way Jax had weathered the wood and hung all the old posters up. The glass pane had been streaked and caked with enough residue to make it hard to see more than a shadow moving around inside, just the way Danny needed it, and the mouse.

“I can’t believe you were able to make this,” Danny said as he held the small remote control prop in his hands.

“Go ahead and put it down and I’ll show you how it works,” Jax said. So Danny set it on the floor and Jax drove it all around, showing Danny the mobility of the piece.

“It’s perfect, we’ll be able to do exactly what we need to do in that scene,” Danny said.

“Awesome, I’m glad to hear it. I’ll have the spare finished by opening night, just in case something goes wrong with this one,” Jax said.

“I didn’t even think of that, thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

Danny leaned against the wall and just looked at everything for a while, then shook his head. “I’m in awe. I really thought we were going to have to cancel. I was ready to give up on the whole thing and just, I don’t know, look into getting certified to teach drama or something.”

Jax laughed.

“Well, judging from the look on your face, I’m guessing that wasn’t something you really wanted to pursue, so I’m glad I was able to spare you the misery of it all.”

“Don’t get me wrong, I love working with others and directing, and teaching playwriting courses, but drama, no, everyone likes to think they are an actor, even when they just don’t have the chops for it and some of them are downright divaish in their attitudes.” Danny explained.

“I guess that would be no fun at all to deal with.”

“Exactly.”

“Hey umm,” Jax suddenly found himself stammering and not very confident that Danny was going to say yes. “I’d umm, really like to take you out Friday night if you’re free. I was thinking we could go to a murder mystery dinner and then if you umm wanted to go out dancing?”

“Don’t you work on Friday nights?”

“Yeah, but I told Steph about the conversation we had about wanting to attend one of those dinners and check it out and she said to go for it, that is, umm, if you’ll agree to come out with me.”

“Jax, I, I’m really not sure that’s the best idea, I mean look what happened last time. I like being your friend, I don’t want us to wreck that by trying to turn it into something more.”

Jax nodded and looked away, biting his lower lip to keep from protesting. Of course Danny wouldn’t want to go out on a date with him.

“Umm..what if it wasn’t a date?” Jax blurted.

“Huh?”

Danny looked confused, giving Jax the opening he needed to just plunge right ahead with the thought that had suddenly popped into his head.

“What if it’s just two friends hanging out?” Jax suggested, thrilled when Danny smiled.

“You know what, I can work with that.”

^^^

Sitting beside Jax at the murder mystery theater, Danny fought the urge to cover Jax’s hand with his own and lace their fingers together, if only to stop the uber thin and rather chic looking young man across from them from flirting with Jax. He’d been doing it all night, from the moment they’d sat down. At first it was just striking up a conversation, asking their names and their favorite mystery authors, but after that it had moved from speaking to both of them to asking Jax a question whenever there was a lull in the conversation around them.

For his part, Jax seemed to be ignoring him, or oblivious, Danny couldn’t be sure which. The one thing that was certain was that Jax’s head was nearly touching his own as they were bent over the notes they’d taken.

Roughly a quarter of an hour before the lights had flickered and gone out. Someone had let out a scream, which was followed by a few gasps before the lights came back on again. Looking around it was discovered that there was a bloody handprint on the arm of a woman in a lavender evening gown and her diamond necklace was missing.

A search of the area around her had yielded a few drops of blood on the floor as well, but try as they might, no one had been able to locate a body yet. Several people were quick to throw out speculation as to who the woman was and why she would be a target, and they had all been told to remain seated until inspectors came.

Of course, they all knew there was more coming and there was conversation and light laughter as meals were nibbled on and drinks were sipped.

Danny had been pleased to see that Jax had finished the food on his plate, but he was careful not to mention it, not wanting to spoil their night by making Jax upset with him.

“I think she’s the killer,” Jax whispered, his mouth so close to Danny’s ear that it made him shiver and think of inappropriate things. Keeping himself detached from the desire he felt for Jax was proving to be difficult. Hell, not viewing this as a date was getting to be difficult and they weren’t even halfway through the evening. Smiling, Jax was charming, his eyes sparkled and there was an enthusiasm to him that Danny had only been able to catch a few glimpses of in the past.
“What makes you say that?” Danny whispered back, willing himself to focus on the conversation.

“She was too calm about the blood on her arm, all of her focus was on the necklace and finding it. I don’t think she worked alone either, did you notice how much attention the sever paid to her when he was taking her order and pouring her wine. They were whispering to each other.”

“Maybe they were flirting,” Danny suggested, frowning a little as he tried to think back to those early moments at the table, but the only thing he’d really been paying attention to was the way Mr. Super Chic Gregory had been flirting with Jax.”

“Maybe, but diamonds and a gown like that flirting with the help right off the bat?” Jax shot back. “I don’t know seems kind of sketchy to me. Lady like that, I doubt she’d have a hard time attracting attention from guys, or at the very least, could have afforded a high priced escort if she’d really wanted attention tonight.”

“Good point, you think she’s one of the actresses?”

“I’d bet on it.”

“Really?” Danny said, and before he could give much thought to the plan already formulating in his mind, he grinned at Jax. “What kind of stakes.”

Jax licked his lips and looked deep into Danny’s eyes, making him blush a little as he fought to hold Jax’s gaze.

“If I’m right, you let me kiss you goodnight at the end of the evening,” Jax said.

Danny’s breath caught in his throat as his eyes widened. Jax was grinning and Danny couldn’t find it in himself to be upset, after all, he’d asked and kissing Jax had been spectacular.

“Fine, if you’re right you get to kiss me, but what do I get if you’re wrong?”

“What do you want?” Jax asked, the look of confidence on his face never wavering.

“A nightcap,” Danny said, enjoying the idea of Jax hanging out in his apartment with him, having a few drinks.

“You’re on,” Jax said as the lights went out again.

Danny gasped, then felt the warmth of a hand enveloping him, long fingers tangling with his and the press of Jax’s head against his own.

“Wonder who’ll be dead next?” Jax whispers, his lips brushing against the shell of Danny’s ear.

Me. Danny wanted to reply as warmth surged through him. He was going to go up in flames if the dance between him and Jax didn’t end soon. He kicked himself for not accepting this as a date. He really wanted this to be a date. He wanted to kiss Jax, he wanted to tangle his fingers in Jax’s hair, he wanted to feel the press of Jax’s body against his and a nice, long make out session that would leave them both longing for more. He just hopped that no matter how the night ended, there would be more without Jax pulling away again first.

The lights came back on again and everyone looked around. It was easy to spot the victim, as it was the very waiter that Jax had referenced before.

“Looks like an awfully dead accomplish,” Danny snickered.

“Doesn’t mean she didn’t kill him too,” Jax shot back, though some of his confidence looked to have slipped.

Danny couldn’t help but chuckle and stand along Jax and the rest of the diners as they moved to ‘investigate.’

“There’s blood on her dress that wasn’t there before,” Jax whispered to Danny, who glanced over at the woman and noticed nothing except the way she adjusted the fold of her skirt.

Danny walked around the ‘body’ making notes on the little pad he carried. Jax meanwhile, walked around the woman before checking out the body, saving his notes until they were back at the table together.

Dessert was served, a three layer cake with liquor flavors running through it. Danny savored it and watched as Jax ate most of his and sipped his coffee. ‘Investigators’ arrived taking statements about the robbery and murder, and while the poked around, a second body was revealed, and with it, brought the moment of truth and the participants were each invited to give their explanations of how, why and by whom the murders took place.
